It takes two to tango.
This saying is more true the more I learn about Argentine tango.
If the leader isn't paying attention to the follower and the follower isn't paying attention to the leader and neither is paying attention to the music, there is no dance.
Washington DC tango DJ and teacher Rick Kim once told me, "Tango is like surfing. Everything surfs on waves. The follower surfs on the leader and the leader surfs on the music." Another dancer told me how much his wife loves to dance with Rick, so I am going to listen to him.
